Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: Based on the figures released this morning on mortgages and mortgage arrears, it seems that most of the figures relate to those who are three months or more in arrears. However, there appears to be a plethora of people who are in the realm of being one or two months in arrears. These numbers will increase. The number of those in arrears has gone from 55,000 in June to 57,000 in August....

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: That may be so.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I join Senator Ivana Bacik in congratulating all involved in the Solheim Cup. It is more evidence that it is becoming less of a man's world, thanks be to God.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I do not know what those rumblings are supposed to suggest, but it was not meant as a sexist remark. With the GAA ladies finals over the weekend and the Solheim Cup, an international event, our sports are starting to receive some attention, which I welcome. The broadcasting of the Solheim cup on Sky Sports and ESPN in the United States puts us on an international setting for tourism, which...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: There should be some compromise. Deputies get to go in at 2 p.m. I do not know what the commitments are in the Dáil and, frankly, I do not care. As Senators, we should be shown the same courtesy.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I agree with you, a Chathaoirligh, but I wanted to raise it with the Leader. If he could do something about it, it would be fantastic. I will go and, obviously, take it up with the committee Chairman now.

Seanad: Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: Well done. That was great.

Seanad: Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the Minister. It is great that there is someone in charge of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport who is so good at his job. I agree with Senator O'Sullivan that we are always very quick to highlight the negative. However, I am of the view that Fianna Fáil did a reasonably good job in respect of transport. The Bill is extremely important in that it will assist in...

Seanad: Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (27 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: When is it proposed to sit again?

Seanad: Address by President of the Irish Human Rights Commission (28 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I feel very emotional hearing Dr. Manning speak today. During the summer I had a little clarity and a good think about the opportunity we all have as elected representatives to this House. It is objectionable that this House is treated as a nursery and a nursing home, and I do not mean that in an offensive way to anyone. With the greatest respect to all my colleagues, this is a House in...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: One would swear the Deputy's party was not in charge of it for the past 12 years.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I will be.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: The previous Government gave it great help - did it not?

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: The Senator should sit down.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: It would have put them in jail.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I agree wholeheartedly with my colleague, Senator MacSharry. The Minister for Health must come to this House. We have been asking for weeks that he come here. The HSE is a basket case. It was created by Fianna Fáil - that is not political points scoring but a fact - and we must do something about it. It is great to find that somebody in the Opposition is of the same mind as me....

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I jest.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: I heard this morning that a record price of €1 million was achieved for the "A Fair Day, Mayo" painting by Jack B. Yeats. It is a magnificent painting, quite unbelievable.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: Up Mayo is right. However, it represents everything that is good about Ireland. It represents where we have come from and where we should be going. It is fantastic that this painting is remaining in Ireland. It was valued at between €500,000 and €800,000 by the auctioneers, James Adam & Sons, and it sold for €1 million. It demonstrates that when something has quality people will...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Catherine Noone: That is a different issue.
