Marie Moloney: Next Tuesday.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Rural Crime (22 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State for taking this matter. It is great to have somebody from my area to respond to it because he knows exactly what I am talking about. The reason I raise this Commencement matter is the level of fear among people in rural Ireland about crime. At the outset, I acknowledge the work done by the Minister, her Department and the Garda in an effort to combat rural...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Rural Crime (22 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State and of course accept it would be a huge cost on the Exchequer. I also acknowledge the Garda crime prevention officers and the support of the community alert and neighbourhood watch groups. Moreover, I agree they are fantastic and are doing great work. It is just that people still live in fear. One can almost taste the fear in people as they speak and this...

Seanad: Marriage Bill 2015: Committee and Remaining Stages (22 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister for attending and facilitating the passage of this Bill. I thank everybody in the Visitors' Gallery. I am delighted Senator Norris has been present during the passage of this Bill. He ploughed a lonely furrow for many a year and I am delighted he is a Member of this Chamber today on the passage of the Bill so he can see what he promoted for so long come to fruition....

Seanad: Children First Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (21 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: We have laid the thanks and praise on Senator Jillian van Turnhout but it would be remiss of us not to thank the Minister for the work he has done here today. Since he became Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, he has always put children first. We congratulate him on being a fantastic Minister. Yesterday and today have been two historic days for Ireland. I am proud to be part of a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: I thank Ms O'Brien and Mr. Stewart for coming in. I also thank the departmental officials who are really good for coming in whenever we request them to answer our questions. This is an issue I have been raising constantly since I was elected to the Seanad. These guys here will say, "She is off again like a broken record", as I have been fighting the cause of some of these people...

Marie Moloney: What about the homemaker's credit?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: That is my point. People should be invited to engage after the homemaker's credit runs out.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: That is not the issue I raised.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: What I said was that even when they access jobseeker's allowance, they are not entitled to a credited contribution during that period. This is totally different from the case of anyone else. Ms O'Brien raised the issue of people who could not transition from jobseeker's benefit to jobseeker's allowance. These people can access credits. However, self-employed people cannot do so for some...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: Mr. McKeon is interpreting what I am saying totally incorrectly. I said a person on illness benefit can access the back-to-education allowance but must be on the illness benefit for two years. However, the individual in question was on illness benefit on a short-term basis, perhaps for 13 months. He went to his caseworker six weeks before the day of starting college and nobody advised him...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: It was all a case of falling between stools. Had the individual been given the right advice by the caseworker six weeks prior to going on the back-to-education allowance, he could have signed off on the illness benefit and moved to the jobseeker's benefit. Had he been on jobseeker's benefit for just one day before applying for the back-to-education allowance, he would have got it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: I refer to illness benefit and jobseeker's benefit for a period of 13 months.

Marie Moloney: That is the same issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Activation Services and Supports for the Unemployed: Discussion (14 Oct 2015)

Marie Moloney: I will make a few brief comments. I am delighted that Mr. McKeon has outlined the wide range of services that are available for people with disabilities. The problem is that they were not mentioned in the Action Plan for Jobs. I raised this omission at the time, as we must always look for the ability and not the disability. Just because someone is in a wheelchair does not mean that he or...
