Seanad: Johnstown Castle Agricultural College (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (11 Jun 2014)

Michael Comiskey: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Simon Coveney, to the House to discuss this legislation, which serves to enable Teagasc to develop the Johnstown Castle estate for heritage, tourism and recreational purposes and to facilitate the building of a burial ground. The Bill amends the Johnstown Castle Agricultural College (Amendment) Act 1959 and the Agriculture (Research, Training and Advice) Act...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture and Fisheries Councils and Report on Promoting Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (10 Jun 2014)

Michael Comiskey: I apologise for leaving earlier and I may have missed some of the earlier contributions. Will we be ready for GLAS in 2015? There is also concern about the 80% figure for commonages, which would present a problem for some. A number of people on commonages may not get into the scheme. Where we have exported beef, particularly along Border counties, there have been penalties and those...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (5 Jun 2014)

Michael Comiskey: I join others in congratulating our former colleague, Deirdre Clune, on her election to the European Parliament. I welcome the announcement of Mr. Kevin O'Malley as the new American ambassador to Ireland. I look forward to him visiting the House in the near future. We hear a great deal of negative news but I welcome the news relating to counties Sligo and Leitrim over the past week. Last...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Maximising the Usage and Potential of Land (Resumed): European Commission (5 Jun 2014)

Michael Comiskey: My question relates to the question put by my colleague, Senator Ó Domhnaill. Some years ago a very good REP scheme operated in Ireland and that helped many farmers who were farming in disadvantaged areas on land with designations such as SACs and NHAs. I understand there is a proposal going to the Commission for a new scheme, GLAS, and it would be very important that the maximum...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: School Accommodation (13 May 2014)

Michael Comiskey: I am happy to hear the Minister of State say the Department will continue to review the position, which is good news. We attended a meeting of the parents and management of the school on Thursday. The parents believe they have a right to send their children to an all-Irish school. In that context, we will wait to hear the outcome of the review.

Michael Comiskey: Go raibh math agat, a Chathaoirligh. I welcome the Minister of State to the House. Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré opened in 1996 in order to meet the demand in Sligo for primary education taught through the medium of Irish. Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré is the only all-Irish school in the Sligo catchment area. The first class had an enrolment of 22 children enrolled and now 192 children attend....

Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)

Michael Comiskey: I join with my colleagues in paying tribute to the former Minister, Deputy Shatter, who was a reforming and hard-working Minister. It is a great pity, he will be a great loss to politics and I wish him and his family well. I also congratulate the Minister, Deputy Fitzgerald, as well as the incoming Minister, Deputy Charles Flanagan, and I look forward to working with them in their new...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Apr 2014)

Michael Comiskey: It is timely this morning that I raise the issue of wind and call for another debate on wind energy given that people are on the streets of Dublin protesting against pylons and wind turbines in certain areas of the country. It was very much highlighted in the news over the weekend how we need now to produce more renewable energy from wind and wave. There are vast areas on the western...

Michael Comiskey: Sheep were in Kildare Street again yesterday evening for the launch of the World Sheep Shearing Championships to be held in Wexford from 17 to 25 May. This event will bring about 300 entrants from throughout the world and will bring approximately 40,000 visitors to the south east. This is very good from a tourism point of view and is most welcome.
