Order of Business (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: A number of important Bills covering planning, crime, property, the courts and prisons are being guillotined between now and Tuesday in order to railroad them through the Houses before Christmas. Today, which is UN Human Rights Day, only two and a half hours are being set aside for Second Stage of the International Protection Bill. Tomorrow, approximately two to three hours has been allowed...

Leaders' Questions (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: We have emissions targets to reach.

Leaders' Questions (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: The Government has cut the OPW's flood risk management programme in 2016 by €15.6 million, or 25%.

Leaders' Questions (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: The €5 million the Government has committed to providing for flood relief will do nothing for home owners as it is allocated to help businesses. The €10 million allocation is means tested and is obviously very restrictive. That is the reason it has not been drawn down.

Leaders' Questions (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: It has never been fully drawn down. We know this situation will only get worse. The weather forecast is not good. The increased prevalence of flooding in Ireland in recent years has been linked to climate change. There has been an increase in the annual rainfall in northern and western areas, while there have been decreases or small increases in the south and east. The Taoiseach has said...

Leaders' Questions (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: The photographs in many of today's papers are very stark. They show entire communities under water and vast swathes of the country are now flooded. Many of us here today come from communities that have been devastated by the recent bad weather, including my own county of Cork. Homes and businesses have been destroyed. People's livelihoods are literally being washed away, and this is not...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: It has been a busy year. I acknowledge that a lot of good work has been done, in addition to a lot of good legislation being passed. Last week, we dealt with the Child Care (Amendment) Bill, which is very welcome. My only concern is that we need to provide resources to ensure that the after-care plans are implemented. I also welcome the Children First Bill. Senator van Turnhout got her...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: Tusla.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: It was a duty social worker who stated this when my secretary outlined the situation, which was just that we needed a referral to CAHMS for a child. Due to behavioural issues, he was only receiving two hours of school per day. It was a significant issue and he needed a referral. While the truancy officer is working with the family, he has not to date - this happened in September - got a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: I can provide the information. The other question was on the reporting of historical abuse and receiving an acknowledgment in a timely manner.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: It is mandatory to report-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: It takes ages to receive an acknowledgement when one reports. It may not be deemed a priority because it is historical, but it is very important to receive an acknowledgement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: The only reason I raised it here was I missed this morning's meeting when I had intended to raise it.

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Investigations (10 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: 133. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if a person who reports an issue and provides a lengthy written statement to An Garda Síochána is entitled to an update on the stage that the investigation is at, if the Director of Public Prosecutions has made any comment on the matter, and if a definite line of inquiry is being followed; and if she will make a statement on the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Medical Cards: Health Service Executive (9 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: I thank the delegates for their presentations. I attended a briefing they gave in the audiovisual room recently at which many issues were covered. I will not go over many of the issues that were raised today. I welcome the positive aspects of the presentations. I wish to refer to a couple of small points on medical card renewals. There seems to be a problem affecting people on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Medical Cards: Health Service Executive (9 Dec 2015)

Sandra McLellan: Ms Hoey might have picked me up slightly wrongly. I was speaking about the decision-maker at the end of the dedicated line. That is where the problem is. We have a dedicated line, but we do not get to speak to a decision-maker. That is the problem. I have highlighted that before on numerous occasions as have other members.
