Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: EirGrid is a semi-State company. Along with other Deputies here I represent the Cavan-Monaghan constituency. The communities in Cavan-Monaghan are very concerned that they have not been treated in the same fair and equitable manner as people in Grid Link and Grid West. There is a fundamental difference in the way they have been treated in terms of consultation compared with the people in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: As time is short Mr. Slye might just answer the five or six technical questions I asked.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: Mr. Slye said there was consultation but the question I asked was why there was no public consultation about underground routes in the North-South project.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: So there was not.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: Am I correct in saying that there is a capacity of 1,200 MW and that it can be expanded to 1,500 MW? We currently have a double circuit but it is not being used as a double circuit.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: In terms of capacity, can it be expanded to 1,500 MW? It currently has a maximum capacity of 1,200 MW.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: We already have the Moyle interconnector and there is a station in Derry as well. There will never be a situation in which all of the power will be flowing in from the South.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: There are three current power stations and an interconnector has been fixed at Moyle. The scenario put by Mr. Slye's scenario would never occur.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: Will Mr. Slye address the differential issue with a 220 kV line? Would it be able to take 500 MW daily compared to a 400 kV AC as proposed by Mr. Slye?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Stormont House Agreement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (2 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: I welcome the Minister. I will start with the issue of fuel laundering. I raised it in a Topical Issue debate about six weeks ago and I also raised it at the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly. It is a serious ongoing issue. Unfortunately, much lip-service is paid to the measures that have been taken to tackle it, but the problem has been getting worse since last October. There is much...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Stormont House Agreement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (2 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: I wish to address an important point the Minister raised, namely, regional business development in terms of the North-South interconnector. He did not want to go into the issue in depth, but no converter stations are proposed for the interconnector. They would have allowed any regional benefit-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Stormont House Agreement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (2 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: Let me just finish my point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Stormont House Agreement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (2 Apr 2015)

Seán Conlan: I understand that, but this is a point of information. I am unsure of what the project is like in Laois, but the first application five years ago called for converter stations in Monaghan, Cavan and Meath. In the new application, no converter stations are proposed. This means that there will be no benefit in our region. It will only be a point-to-point interconnector.
