Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 30 - Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Revised)
(31 Jan 2024)

Michael Ring: I wish to raise an issue in relation to the seafood sector. There is great concern, particularly with the new regulations due to Brexit. What will the Minister do for the industry? It will need supports and backup. It is in real difficulty. I have raised this issue with the Minister before. There is an extra burden now from the red tape, not that Brussels is great at it. I was glad to...

Michael Ring: There is an issue about which I will write to the Minister because I do not want to name the people here today. An industry in my town got a notification from the Minister's Department yesterday telling it to cease production for the supply of goods to animals, which it does very well. It employs 40 people. It has been told to cease because a company in England and a company in Ireland...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Crisis in Ireland's Inshore Fishing Industry: Discussion (24 Jan 2024)

Michael Ring: I welcome the delegation. They would not be here if there were not a need for them to be here. They want to be at home fishing and not here making the case. If the strategy that Deputy Creed introduced had been carried out, would that have resolved some of the problems that the fishermen had?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Crisis in Ireland's Inshore Fishing Industry: Discussion (24 Jan 2024)

Michael Ring: When the officials appear before the committee today, we need to ask them where that strategy is and what they are going to do about it. Who made the decision not to roll that strategy out? If a strategy was announced by a Minister in good faith with the fishing organisations, that strategy should be continued. The purpose of strategies is to plan for the future and to support the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Crisis in Ireland's Inshore Fishing Industry: Discussion (24 Jan 2024)

Michael Ring: I have listened and there are two big issues. First, there has to be some kind of a subsidy in the short term and, second, the inshore fishers have to be allowed into existing stock. That has to be done immediately as otherwise these fishermen will not be in the industry. We should put pressure on the Department in that regard when its officials appear later.
