Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Deaths of Irish Citizens in Berkeley: Expressions of Sympathy (17 Jun 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I would like to be associated with the remarks that have just been made. I wish to make a suggestion, namely, that this committee, under the Chairman's leadership, write formally to the president of UCD. I believe I am correct in assuming that all the students are from UCD.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Deaths of Irish Citizens in Berkeley: Expressions of Sympathy (17 Jun 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: A significant number are from UCD. Part and parcel of living on an island off an island off the west coast of Europe is that, in order to gain an understanding of the rest of the world, one needs to travel. The J1 visa and the concentration of UCD students in Berkeley comprise a very constructive semi-sheltered way of embarking on that kind of journey. Not only should we express our...

Order of Business (14 May 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: The Government recently published the legislation to enact the dissolution of the Dublin Docklands Authority. Can the Tánaiste give an indication as to when it will be taken in the House?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Persecution of Christians: Discussion (13 May 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I welcome the witnesses. I do not propose to repeat the pertinent questions asked by Deputy Brendan Smith. Many lessons from history can be utilised in this regard. In his human rights campaign Martin Luther King held up to the white population of America the Constitution of the United States when he called on them to implement constitutional rights for all the country's citizens. This...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Persecution of Christians: Discussion (13 May 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I congratulate Fr. Bartlett on his contribution. I would love to see traditional Catholic and Christian people in this country mobilised to respond to what he has described. We will respond, and we are responding. There are three kinds of Catholics on this island, certainly in this State: Catholics by conviction, Catholics by culture and Catholics by compulsion. The Catholics by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries: Irish Exporters Association (29 Apr 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I have read the recommendations and endorse much of what Deputy Smith said. We cannot do the job of the witnesses but they can tell us what we can do to make their jobs better and easier. The witnesses can decode No. 9 as a very polite way of saying: "Let us not offend them". However, if the witnesses do not tell us the truth, we cannot fix it. There are silos and complications and we are...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Education and Training Boards Data (28 Apr 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: 378. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she is aware that some education and training boards are not facilitating the sharing of information with the public, as official e-mail addresses of board members are not in the public domain, with the result that members of the public, including parent groups, are unable to contact board members and have been told by officials of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Ebola Crisis in Sierra Leone: Irish Ambassador (25 Mar 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: Hear, hear.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Role and Interaction of GAA with the Diaspora: GAA (25 Feb 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I apologise for my late arrival. I have had an opportunity to read through the presentation and I congratulate both of our guests on it. I wish to endorse the comments that have already been made. In the interests of brevity, I recognise all of the issue so accurately outlined by our guests. I wish Mr. O'Neill well in the final few days of his presidency. It seems that no time has passed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Role and Interaction of GAA with the Diaspora: GAA (25 Feb 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: It has, in effect, started.

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs and Trade (Revised)
(28 Jan 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: My questions relate to the future because the Estimates have been signed off for this year. First, I acknowledge the presence of the former Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Is there any way the Estimates for Vote 28 can include the promotion of cultural product in all of its manifestations? We have seen the devastation of the domestic budget for culture. We should remember...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs and Trade (Revised)
(28 Jan 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I wish to follow up on the point raised. Deputy O'Sullivan's interest in Cuba dates back a long time, as does mine. There is in Ireland a Cuba solidarity group. The Minister could perhaps start by inviting its representatives to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to explore possible and existing connections.

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs and Trade (Revised)
(28 Jan 2015)

Ruairi Quinn: I have two questions on subhead B. Would it be possible at some stage to communicate to Members of both Houses the comparative costs of passports in other European countries, specifically the 28 EU countries? Is the figure an arbitrary one that cannot be compared? There is no Aldi or Lidl version, so we do not know whether our passport fee is good value for money. I record my appreciation...
