Flood Relief: Statements. (24 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: Without realising it, we have brought about a change in Dáil procedures. We talk about innovation, but we are being innovative in what we are doing now. Members have travelled here from where they live, having observed the conditions in their home areas. They will speak in the Chamber for two or three minutes and telling it as it is. That is a remarkable change. I travelled up to the...

Flood Relief: Statements. (24 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: I listened to all the Opposition speakers' woes and I want my chance to speak.

Flood Relief: Statements. (24 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: I commend whoever proposed the taking of this business because it makes a change. We have all been used to floods. The people in Athlone have experienced them for many years and 1954 is the year against which all subsequent floods in Athlone are benchmarked. As a result of the flooding that has taken place in Athlone on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and today, the water is now 3 ft. above the...

International Human Trafficking: Motion (Resumed) (18 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: I did not realise I was quite so generous. Anyway, that is fine. I am delighted. I commend Deputy Naughten on this motion. It is his brief at front bench and he has been extremely active in following up all of the matters relating to human trafficking. In the nature of a debate like this, we record what is good and what could be done to make it better. The Criminal Law (Human...

Adoption Bill 2009 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: I thank the House for the opportunity to speak on this legislation, which I welcome. I noted as I entered the Chamber that there are present three female Members one or other of whom have either contributed to the debate or are awaiting an opportunity to do so. I note the officials accompanying the Minister of State are also female. The reason for this is, I suppose, that this is an issue...

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: Listening to various speakers this evening has been interesting. It seems that Fine Gael has a policy called, "Let us have a general election".

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: Each Front Bench spokesperson has said that he or she wants a general election on the grounds that it is the only thing that could clear up the financial morass in which we find ourselves.

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: As to whether they believe a general election would solve all of our difficulties, it is interesting that it was the main point put forward by each speaker on the Opposition benches to whom I listened.

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: I listened carefully and did not shout and roar, even though I was tempted. Fine Gael's point in this debate has been made clear, namely, let us have a general election. We will not, since it would solve nothing.

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: We are operating on the mandate given to us by the people when they voted for us. For some reason, Deputy Enda Kenny cannot get it out of his head that he did not make it two and a half years ago or get into the position for which he had hoped. Be that as it may, we are faced with a budget. I thank the Fianna Fáil Front Bench, including the Taoiseach, for this debate. Everyone agrees that...

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: Excuse me, but Deputy O'Sullivan will have plenty of chances to talk.

Pre-budget Outlook: Statements (17 Nov 2009)

Mary O'Rourke: It is deceitful of Fine Gael to tell the House that it agrees with most of the McCarthy report without ever telling anyone the specifics. Pressure groups approaching Fine Gael and Labour will be told that the parties do not agree with the cuts in question and would not have included them in their agendas.
