Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Challenges Facing Minority Sports: Discussion (25 Sep 2019)

John O'Mahony: There is a strong case to be made. The programme for Government speaks of doubling the commitment to sport over the next number of years. I hope that some of it can be ring-fenced for minority sports.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Challenges Facing Minority Sports: Discussion (25 Sep 2019)

John O'Mahony: Mr. Doyle made a point about the funding not being paid out until April. Is it within Sport Ireland's remit to change that or to have more flexibility in reacting?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Challenges Facing Minority Sports: Discussion (25 Sep 2019)

John O'Mahony: In the context of some other organisations that have appeared before the committee, the FAI used to request that funding be front-loaded. If that was happening with one, it should be happening with minority sports in particular because they need it more.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: I thank our guests for their presentations and for their ongoing work on the issue. I return to a point made by Mr. Treacy about Sport Ireland's meeting with the FAI last Friday, at which Sport Ireland outlined its concerns about a completely new board. Did I read that correctly?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: What response did the FAI give Sport Ireland at the meeting?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: I agree and I am glad those points of clarification were made. I prepared questions based on our guests' opening statements, which suggested they all were happy with the progress, but then the Minister's letter was published yesterday evening. I was surprised that the clarifications were much stronger than what they was contained in their opening statements.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: I am glad to hear that. When Sport Ireland previously appeared before the committee, I made a comparison with the Olympic Council of Ireland and our guests very much agreed on the way that process was started. In that case, although the president who was appointed, Sarah Keane, had been on the board for a couple of years, she had been an open critic of what had been going on. She has done...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: I find this difficult. With all the issues, it beggars belief that there is an unopposed election.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: To return to a point made by Senator Feighan, the presentation made to us by the athletes made it sound as if there is a loophole. I agree with what Mr. Treacy stated. Perhaps it is a technicality. One can argue that it is not a sporting issue, but it is a big issue for those involved. In the Olympics, there is no issue with people opting for the UK or Ireland. In the case of the IAAF,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: It is an issue of minutiae but not for the very genuine people it affects. The report states that there has been no correspondence on this. Would it be possible for Sport Ireland to meet the athletes at some stage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: This was one of the requests they made to the committee. Sport Ireland could meet them and tease out the issue and perhaps find a solution.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Governance Review Group Report for the FAI Board and Sport Ireland: Sport Ireland (17 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: Will Mr. Treacy meet them?

Seanad: Genetic Testing: Motion (10 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: I understand that Senator Boyhan wants to second the motion. We will then hear from the Minister.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of the Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2019: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

John O'Mahony: I thank Mr. Gallagher for his presentation and briefing. He mentioned that the new amalgamation will provide better services. Can he give me an example of that? He also said that some of the costs would be marginal and he does not know where some of the higher figures came from but in recent times we have seen the picture change very quickly on the costs of various projects. Is Mr....
