Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: I thank the Taoiseach for his response. I fully understand and appreciate the value of migration. His final comments address the issue I am raising, which I raised in the past with him, about the influx of people. I am not hindering their opportunity to come to Ireland but local people are extremely concerned about the numbers arriving in their small villages and towns without the support...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: Say that on the record. You are a lout, that is what you are.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: On the same theme, the events that took place on the streets of our capital city last Thursday night will haunt people's memories for many years to come. A knife attack on innocent children is the most despicable form of violence. People are sickened by what took place outside that school. It has rattled them to the very core. Above all, people need to know that their children are safe....

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: It has reached the stage where people fear the Department will target every vacant building in their communities. I want to say that the Irish people are not racist, and I am not racist.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: They have welcomed, and I have welcomed, the victims of the war in Ukraine with open arms. They have willingly opened their hearts to those in need. However, I believe it is time to modify and rebalance our immigration policy. The events of last week taught us about the critical role of our gardaí in society and the urgent necessity to focus on the limitations of the force. The...

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2023: Second Stage (23 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: I compliment the Minister on negotiating and securing a substantial social welfare package. Those most in need through the budget are supported and assisted financially. There will never be a budget that satisfies the wants and needs of everyone, particularly when it comes to social welfare. Budget 2024 was no exception. Due to the surge in the cost of living, those who are solely...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: I have been in my car for two hours in a traffic jam. I welcome Mr. Jacobs. I am surprised that he is the Lone Ranger today and he does not have his chairman or other people with him. Even Michael O'Leary would not try that in here. I have been through the airport on a number of occasions this year. We had Mr. Jacobs in here a number of times last year, taking heavy criticism about the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: I want to ask about the capacity issue. I do not see the logic of this. The airport is a major piece of infrastructure and is of huge importance to the economy, not just of Dublin but the Irish economy in general. To have this situation where we have a cap on capacity does not make sense, in my view. Mr. Jacobs' presentation states that the cap on capacity means that the DAA has to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: He was getting rapped on a regular basis. That brings me to the DAA’s projections. Mr. Jacobs is saying “by 2030”, which is a seven-year forward planning programme. I do not think that is the proper way to approach this. The DAA needs a much more long-term plan for Dublin Airport. The DAA’s application next year to increase from 32 million to 40 million is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: On what I was asking about terminals 1 and 2, the DAA has made, or is about to make, an application to increase the capacity from 32 million to 40 million. Will that additional capacity of eight million be found in terminal 2 or in a combination of both terminals?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: What is the maximum number the airport can take in terminals 1 and 2?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: With the new buildings for which the DAA is going in for planning.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: Will that bring those two terminals to maximum capacity?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: I am asking about the operating capacity.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Michael Lowry: The point I am trying to get to is that Mr. Jacobs is saying that that is the airport's operational capacity and it is going to achieve it in the next couple of years. Does that not highlight the fact there is an additional need for a new terminal at Dublin Airport?
