Representatives of the Retail Grocery Dairy and Allied Trades Association, RGDATA, Retail Excellence Ireland and the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association will appear in our next session. I hope we will see the witnesses again later in the year when...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: The committee is now resumed in public session. I remind members, visitors and those in the Public Gallery to ensure their mobile phones are switched off or on flight mode for the duration of this meeting as they interfere with the broadcasting equipment, even when on silent mode. I welcome Mr. Vincent Jennings, CEO of the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association, CSNA, Ms Tara...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: I suggest we need a little clarity in this regard. The Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016 was discussed in the Dáil in July of last year. I do not have the exact date. The Bill has not yet been passed on Second Stage. The Dáil voted to refer it back to this committee. As a result, we have no choice but to look at the Bill. The Bill will return to the Dáil in July of this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: Not at all. Before I call Senator Gavan, I would like to mention that my background is in retail. My family owned an independent grocery retailer for 17 years and was a member of RGDATA. We have a family jewellery business as well. I have been on both sides of the counter as an employee and as an employer. I accept Ms Higgins's point about the importance of businesses having good working...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: It is actually 19. They are only allowed work a certain number of hours. That point has not been raised at the committee and it is one about which we should be cognisant. For example, a person participating on a community employment scheme can work 20 hours a week. Does Mr. Smyth want to add a further comment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed). (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: I think that concludes all the questions. I thank all the witnesses for their attendance today. I again apologise for keeping you waiting for so long but the first session was inclined to run on. That concludes all of our business on today's agenda. The joint committee will now adjourn until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, 21 February, when we will resume our discussion on the Banded Hours Contracts...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Commission for Energy Regulation and Irish Water (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: I want to revert to the experience in Scotland and Wales with water meters. Representatives of Scottish Water stated at last week's meeting that it could detect leaks using its district metering system. This clearly is at odds with a previous statement issued by Irish Water. We also learned last week that only half of Welsh Water customers were metered but that this had resulted in a 40%...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services: Commission for Energy Regulation and Irish Water (14 Feb 2017)

Mary Butler: Mr. Grant said at the start of his answer that the provision of meters was a political decision. Was there any weight given to having a district metering system only, as against a domestic metering system which, as we know, caused a great deal of controversy? Did Irish Water stand back at the start and think about whether it should be looked at it from the point of view of having a district...
