Safety and Well-being of Children Online: Discussion

2:00 am

Mr. Anthony O'Connor:

Just to clarify, it was not our research, it was actually research by CyberSafeKids. We see schools and youth workers playing a role in that, particularly the role of the youth worker having in-person conversations and those in-person relationships to prepare young people for their journey online. For example, there is the connect safely programme for eight- to 11-year-old children. As we know, the digital age of consent is 16, so why do we have a programme for eight- to 11-year-olds? It is for that early intervention piece and preparing people for that online journey of being a digital citizen. Youth workers and schools alike are well placed to have those kind of in-person conversations to help young people in the online experience and building those digital literacy skills.
