Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills

Provision of Special Needs Education: Discussion

Ms Margaret Turley:

The training that would be good would involve getting people with disabilities into mainstream schools to see what the individual pupil needs and not saying "oh you have a disability. Okay we know what you need." It would involve talking to the parents and seeing what would help the child to learn, what the school can do and what the parents can do to help at home, because they are trying to work together to help the child. Perhaps there could be training for teachers in order that they would know in advance what would be needed.
