Sexual Violence and Harassment Policies and Procedures in Higher Education Institutions: Discussion (Resumed)

2:00 am

Ms Niamh Kavanagh:

The idea behind that project goes back to what Deputy McGettigan was saying earlier about needing to engage men, particularly young men. It is a men's leadership programme led by Atlantic Technological University, ATU. We are partners on it, as is DkIT. It has been a fantastic programme, with some 50 men across the higher education sector in Ireland engaged in it. They have attended two residential courses in Athlone to learn about gender equality, pornographic literacy and everything they need to learn about to help us on this journey. It is about having a cohort of men within our institutions whom we can call on to get involved in interventions. As we have discussed today, a lot of the pastoral care in universities is done with women. We really need to influence our young men. We recognise that engaging men in this way might help us to do that and to get them more on board. It has been a fantastic programme and compliments go to ATU on leading it. We hope to get a second round of funding for it and we will see where that takes us.
