Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Equality

Safety and Well-being of Children Online: Discussion (Resumed)

2:00 am

Mr. Richard Collard:

There are about 100 million pieces of content uploaded everyday to TikTok and we want to make sure children have that age appropriate experience. Of that 100 million, about 1% is violative and we want to reduce that as much as possible. We remove the vast majority of that through automated technology before anyone even reports that to us. We need to be conscious there are types of content that while not violative of our policies, if seen in concentration, it could be problematic.

Let us take people talking about their own mental health journeys. Seeing one person talk about that would be fine but seeing that 50 times in a row would not be and that is why we have a tool called our dispersion tool. It is about making sure that anyone on TikTok does not have a really concentrated, narrow experience of seeing content. We are injecting new forms of content within their experience so they continue to see a diverse range of content.
