Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Equality

Safety and Well-being of Children Online: Discussion

2:00 am

Ms Alex Cooney:

I will start by saying there was some really interesting research in Ireland early this year by Block W and the ESRI which was looking at parenting in the digital age. It considered 4,000 different pieces of research. It found that many parents are also struggling to mediate their own use, which obviously makes it harder to mediate their children's use. Another conclusion was that parents cannot do this on their own. Even if you are the best digital parent, you still need these online spaces to be made safer by design for children.

In relation to effective campaigns, the New Zealand Government led a really effective campaign called Keep It Real Online. It had a whole campaign page. They put out a series of short videos such as one-minute videos and a lot of support resources. This campaign effectively went viral. It was led by the government but it was a multi-stakeholder approach, including the New Zealand police. It is called Keep It Real Online. That is one we have often cited as being simple, effective messaging.

There have been others. Common Sense Media has led some brilliant campaigns for parents as well, such as Device Free Dinner, using well-known personalities and recognisable faces to land important messages about boundaries, for example, in the households.

There are some really good examples. I would even say the Data Protection Commission's recent what was called sharenting campaign was another excellent example and I believe it has done really well in pointing out the dangers of sharing too much information about your children online. There are some really good examples and it would be fantastic to see the Government leading out on some of these.
