Transatlantic Trade Relations: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland
2:00 am
John Lahart (Dublin South West, Fianna Fail)
I do not want to labour the point - maybe Mr. O'Callaghan can come back to us on this - but pharma is powerful piece of the Irish economic story. As an observer, I am saying you do not use your leverage to reduce the cost or increase the supply of orphan drugs. That seems to be the problem. Sometimes, it seems to be on the Government side of that. Those companies - not the American Chamber of Commerce - should maybe use the economic leverage they have in the country. The orphan drugs and rare diseases issues are something we all face here. That is becoming the case more and more. It often strikes me that these companies have a big footprint here. We are not talking about them pushing their weight around, but a message has to be sent to the central system that there is a much bigger role that can be played here that would result in reduced costs and far more availability of these drugs in comparison with the regimes that obtain among our European Union counterparts. That is something we could do.
