402. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government if he will outline the role of the National Parks and Wildlife Service in ensuring the protection of the old Irish goat, which, according to reports (details supplied), is being hunted for sport and on the verge of extinction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The hunting of certain wild animals is regulated in part by the Wildlife Act 1976. Where a wild animal is listed as a 'protected wild animal' under that Act, then the species enjoys the protections of the Act and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) plays a role in regulating hunting activity and enforcing legislation as it applies to that species.

In respect of the Old Irish Goat, the position is that this species is not listed as a 'protected wild animal' under the Wildlife Act 1976.
