360. To ask the Minister for Social Protection the cost that would be associated with restoring the Christmas bonus; the number of persons who would benefit if it was reinstated on the basis and previously applied; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [32445/14]

The Revised Estimates for the Department of Social Protection in 2014 do not include any provision for payment of a Christmas Bonus. The estimated cost of re-introducing a bonus payment for Christmas (analogous to the bonus payment which applied up to 2008 and based on the projected number of beneficiaries in late 2014) is in the order of €254 million. It would benefit approximately 1.16m recipients.

I've said before that a 'bonus' doesn't necessarily have to be equal to the standard weekly payment. I'm sure a 'bonus' of between 60% & 40% would be appreciated.
