Question 133: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of prisoners incarcerated in each of the past two years to date in 2010 in tabular form; the number of prison cells accommodating one prisoner only; the number with more than one; the cell or cells recording the highest number of prisoners in the period in question; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Irish Prison Service Annual Report for 2008 indicates that there were 13,557 committals to prison involving 10,928 persons for that year. The Report was published on the 14th August 2008 and is available on the website of the Irish Prison Service at www.irishprisons.ie. Final statistics for 2009 are in the process of being prepared and will be published in the Annual Report for that year in the near future. The other information sought by the Deputy is not readily available.
