Jobs Initiative 2011: Statements (Resumed) (11 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I wish to share time with Deputies Maureen O'Sullivan, Luke 'Ming' Flanagan and Thomas Pringle.

Jobs Initiative 2011: Statements (Resumed) (11 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I welcome Deputy Peter Mathews' sentiments on the European Union. I hope matters turn out as he described, as it would be wonderful if the European Union saw sense and started to treat us fairly. Too often Members on this side of the House are accused of being negative about everything. I like to believe we honestly say what we feel. If what we tell the coalition is sometimes negative,...

Electoral (Amendment) (Political Donations) Bill 2011: Second Stage (resumed) (11 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: Deputy Martin stated in his speech last night that political donations had created a perception that big business can buy influence by financially supporting the election funds of parties or candidates and that it was having a damaging impression, which is putting it mildly. He might perhaps have said that private capital tends to be concentrated in few hands, the enormous power of which...

Electoral (Amendment) (Political Donations) Bill 2011: Second Stage (resumed) (11 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I am probably naive. Time will tell. There is no doubt but that something must change if the people are to garner a better opinion of what happens in this House. The legislation recommends that donations over €1,000 be declared. I believe that all donations over €100 should be declared. The public is entitled to know the identity of anyone who wishes to give €100 or more to a...

Electricity Transmission Network (12 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: There is a bit of a difference.

Local Authority Housing (17 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: Will the Minister of State consider examining the manner in which PPPs are appointed and their structure? The structure is flawed and there is good reason the estates that were not developed were held by the same builder-developer. The manner in which the selection process works has major problems. Most builders could not possibly get on the list. Only a handful of builders in Ireland...

Local Authority Housing (17 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: This may apply to private or social housing. There is no proper control of workmanship. In the private sector, engineers and architects sign off on the work but the builder-developer pays the architect and engineer so they have no choice but to go along with him.

Local Authority Housing (17 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: We did away with the clerk of works years ago. Fianna Fáil got rid of them when it suited the party and its friends and we need to introduce a system for controlling workmanship.

Local Authority Housing (17 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: It was not related to standards.

Finance (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (resumed) (25 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I reassure Deputy Durkan that I too am very keen to stay in Europe. I am also an optimist at heart and believe everything is possible but I also believe we should get a fair deal from Europe which is not the case at present. I say to the Deputy that when a person goes into a bookie's office and backs a horse, if the horse does not win, the person loses. I agree with him on that point....

Finance (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (resumed) (25 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: There are many elements I like in the Finance (No. 2) Bill, especially the VAT proposal which will be an enormous boost to the hotel and restaurant industry. I believe in the principle of investment. Investment stimulates an economy whereas austerity drains it. Unfortunately, we are probably not getting as much investment as we would like and are getting much more austerity than we would...

Finance (No. 2) Bill 2011: Second Stage (resumed) (25 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: It is immoral that people get more than €200,000 for any State job, whether in Government, any State company or in television.

Agriculture: Motion (Resumed) (25 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: We are all fairly well aware that we are short on indigenous industry and very dependent on multinationals to provide employment and to drive the export market. Of the indigenous industry, farming accounts for approximately 60% of exports and it plays a significant role in the domestic economy. There is little doubt that the deal the farmer gets from supermarkets leaves much to be desired....

Accident and Emergency Services (31 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: Question 40: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if maintaining the 24 hour accident and emergency service at Wexford General Hospital remains in the long-term plans of the health service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13514/11]

Accident and Emergency Services (31 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I am glad to hear that the Minister intends to maintain a 24-hour accident and emergency service, as well as maintain the general upkeep of the hospital. He stated before the election that we cannot afford to downgrade Wexford General Hospital because we do not have capacity elsewhere to take up the load. He will be aware that the psychiatric hospital in Enniscorthy, St. Senan's, has been...

Accident and Emergency Services (31 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: The 2010 report of the Inspector of Mental Health Services was critical of the facilities in Waterford but nothing substantial was done to improve the facility since the report was published. Adding to the existing problems in Waterford, patients from Wexford now use the same facility. The acute mental health service in Waterford Regional Hospital is located in a basement overlooked by a...

Accident and Emergency Services (31 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I agree that it will be great if services in the community are brought up to scratch but at present the people are going nuts in Wexford because they are demoralised about what is available in Waterford. Community facilities offer a way forward provided adequate facilities are put in place.

Order of Business (31 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: I will give credit where it is due. I commend the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Varadkar, on his honesty and straight talking at the weekend. It is very refreshing.

Criminal Justice Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (31 May 2011)

Mick Wallace: Dealing with white collar crime is an important initiative and the Government will impress if it is serious in dealing with this issue. There is no doubt that our mind set in this area needs to change. The Irish Criminal Bar Association conference on white collar crime highlighted the range of legislative and regulatory measures already in place. Speakers at the conference maintained that...

Government and Oireachtas Reform: Motion (Resumed) (1 Jun 2011)

Mick Wallace: I thank Government Deputies for their interesting contributions. There was a divergence of opinion among speakers, which I welcome.
