Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2015)

Joe Costello: ...-traditional family relationship. We have been dealing with much of the fallout from that perception of what a family was and how it should be dealt with in society. We have had to deal with the Magdalen laundry cases and the women who were pretty much incarcerated there. We have had to deal with children in industrial schools, reformatories and orphanages. All of that has been part and...

Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (29 Jan 2015)

Joe Costello: ...word might have been chosen. The Minister of State is a well-known Gaeilgeoir and he will know whether it is the most appropriate word. To me, it seems a little questionable. I spent many years in the 1980s living right beside a Magdalen home in Sean MacDermott Street. There I saw the older women who were institutionalised and the younger women who were very vulnerable. It certainly...

Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation: Motion (Resumed) (21 Jan 2015)

Joe Costello: ...analysis of the operation of these institutions and the mistreatment of the children. Subsequently, in 2011, the present Government moved the process further and set up the investigation into the Magdalen homes, where thousands of young Irish women were incarcerated without trial, largely for the crime of becoming pregnant and bearing children out of wedlock. Former Senator Martin...

Magdalen Laundries: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (13 Feb 2013)

Former Senator McAleese and the committee are to be commended on their excellent work in bringing to light what happened to these women and for setting out the role of the State in the operation of the laundries. I...

Joe Costello: Question 473: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality his views on the findings and recommendations of the UN Committee Against Torture in regard to prison facilities and Magdalene Laundries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15243/11]

Order of Business (10 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: Yesterday Deputy Gilmore raised the issue of the Irish Human Rights Commission report on the Magdalene homes. The Taoiseach indicated he was referring the matter to the Attorney General for his opinion. Will the Taoiseach also refer the matter of the equivalent Protestant homes? The Magdalene homes were for mothers and children-----

Order of Business (10 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: -----as it is being referred to the Attorney General. The equivalent of the Catholic Magdalene homes was the Protestant Bethany home. The same lack of supervision by the State also applied in Protestant homes. I ask the Taoiseach to also refer the matter of the Protestant homes to the Attorney General so that this vexed question can be dealt with once and for all.

Order of Business (17 Dec 2009)

Joe Costello: I fully support what has been said about the Magdalene women. We must find a means to address the situation, whether by extending the Residential Institutions Redress Board, or by a new mechanism. This is a live issue. For example, there are ten women in the Magdalene convent in Seán McDermott Street who will be moved against their will by 1 January to new accommodation. They have been...
