Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: VAT Refunds to Unregistered Farmers: Revenue Commissioners (8 May 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: That is grand. There is one thing I cannot get my head around. The witnesses indicated that if a meal tank is built on a new build, the VAT can be reclaimed, but it cannot be reclaimed on other than a new build. What is the thinking behind that? If I have a big door where I have the tank, whether it is an old place or a new place, the tank has to go into it. You build the building and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Water Quality and the Nitrates Derogation: Discussion (15 Sep 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...if some of the stuff we heard comes to pass in the line of a single farm payment, which is starting on Friday week. I would like the Minister's comment on that. A remark was made to us that indicated that they are basically going all environmental. If Pillar 1 goes all environmental, then we are in trouble. In the line of the derogation, when we met the guy, Sinkeviius or whatever his...

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (5 Jul 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...to ensure this will be voluntary for private landowners. The Government has been saying that, but then I listened to the Minister of State's speech. He talked about Bord na Móna and Coillte, indicating that the work would mostly be done by them. However, there is an "if" there and we are afraid of that "if". It is the "if" of which farmers around rural Ireland are afraid. When I...

Nature Restoration Law: Motion [Private Members] (5 Jul 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...shoulder most of the responsibility; and — the Nature Restoration Law has been rejected by three separate committees in the European Parliament, resulting in no amended proposals coming from any of the three committees, and that such an unprecedented outcome indicates that a wide variety of members in the European Parliament consider this to be a seriously flawed piece of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: This is in light of what the witnesses have said about the mushroom industry and the research they have done indicating that there is nothing suitable. Unfortunately, we have invited three Ministers in. There is a bit of cat and mouse going on about what is happening. There was been a court case in the past week where the EPA brought growers to court about a hydrologically linked area....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Strategic Direction of Bord Bia: Discussion (22 Mar 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: That is fine but I would urge the witnesses to look at a limit of six months or a year before the likes of that would even be allowed. On the protected geographical indication, PGI, status, how much would that mean per kilogram for the farmer who produces the animal on the grass, or mostly grass?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Strategic Direction of Bord Bia: Discussion (22 Mar 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...it or saying it is right, but how do they stand over farms that are killing calves at a week or two weeks old? I saw a reference to this in the paper. Again, I am not accusing the witnesses but it indicated Bord Bia had said they would have to be eight weeks. When you talk about veal at seven or eight months, it is not killing a calf for most farmers. This message needs to go out loud...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forestry Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (22 Feb 2023)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank the representatives for coming in. The Forestry Licensing Dashboard features a little section on licences issued versus planting. A yellow box indicates the planting for 2023. It does not give us the figures but I am fairly all right at maths and, going by what I am looking at, it was less than 50 ha in January. I would need a pair of glasses to see what the planting was for the...

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Land Issues (15 Nov 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...details supplied) which have been notified to the trustees of Rockingham Estate, who have in turn sought approval from his Department to rectify the situation on land registry maps which appear to indicate ownership of local farmers’ land; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [56501/22]

Water Policy: Statements (9 Nov 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...to be treated the same as everywhere else. The House is in agreement that many people are very unhappy about what is going on with the workers in the councils. The Minister needs to give a clear indication that a referendum takes place. That is ferociously important. The Government should say that straight away because many of the workers are very sceptical about what is going on. ...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Aquaculture Industry: Discussion (21 Sep 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank Mr. Mulloy for the very comprehensive submission. I will open the discussion to the floor. Deputy Mac Lochlainn has indicated first and I invite him to ask his questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Nitrates Derogation and Nitrates Action Programme: Discussion (14 Sep 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I am going by what the Department figures show. They indicate that of farms with more than 500 units, 529 are in derogation; of those with more than 400 units, 411 are in derogation; of those with more than 300 units, 928 are in derogation; and of those with more than 200 units, 1,074 are in derogation. These are some of the figures the Department has given us. I was trying to get my head...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Calculation of Methane Emissions: Discussion (20 Jul 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I ask the two scientists to give me one indication. Let us say Ireland has 7 or 8 million cattle. If we in Ireland were to reduce methane by 20% what would it do to world temperatures? Would it do anything?

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Air Services (5 Jul 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: 152. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the performance indicators that have been agreed with an airline (details supplied) on the regional development of routes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [36187/22]

Circular Economy, Waste Management (Amendment) and Minerals Development (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed) (31 Mar 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...a ferocious turnaround to get things back to where they were, and it will not be Ireland on its own; it will need to be an effort on the part of the EU and the wider world. I acknowledge the Minister of State indicated he will grant us a meeting to discuss ideas. In the construction sector, for example, approximately 50% of emissions could be got rid of if we did things the way we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horticultural Peat Supply and Willow Scheme: Bord na Móna (23 Mar 2022)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...and insinuated that a pile of peat harvested a year or two before required planning permission if it was to be moved. Bord na Móna probably has peat harvested up to 2020. The line of questioning indicates that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Had Bord na Móna the same problem or was it just encountered by private individuals? I would say this is what Deputy...

Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 30 - Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I saw in a report by Agriland or another such organisation that Macra na Feirme had indicated a scheme for young farmers had been agreed at EU level. I did not see details of it; I have looked. Is there a scheme coming out that will make it easier for young farmers to gain access to money to buy land or for another purpose? Macra na Feirme wrote something about it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Nitrates Directive, Water Quality and Pollution: Discussion (13 Oct 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: The watery slurry would go through free-draining soils more quickly. If that happens, it would clearly get to a stream a bit more quickly. Have any tests been done where results indicate we might be better putting out a thicker type of slurry?

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...who are being transported in cars and SUVs at present? In light of what is reported in the Irish Farmers' Journalthis morning, it is important for farmers and others in rural areas for the Government to indicate if it is staying with the roadmap in respect of nitrates - with different figures for dairy cows, suckler cows, calves, etc. - or is there a new agenda under the climate...

Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2021: Committee and Remaining Stages (14 Jul 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: ...no point in us standing up here all night, every single one of us, going through amendment after amendment. The first thing the Minister might do is to be honest with the politicians in opposition and indicate whether he is going to accept any of the amendments. There must be clarity in that regard. There is no point in us going around in circles all night when we do not know. The...
