Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services (19 Jan 2022)

John Brady: ...for approximately four years; if it is intended that the health centre will reopen in the future; if so, when it is likely to reopen; and if not, the future plans of the HSE for this building going forward. [1189/22]

Regional Transport Infrastructure: Motion [Private Members] (9 Nov 2021)

John Brady: Last week, the Government announced the climate action plan. Unfortunately, what we have seen today in the NTA's draft transport strategy from 2022 until 2042 is a failure to bring forward ambition. There is certainly no ambition when it comes to Wicklow. Unfortunately, we have a Government that makes little mention of Wicklow, especially west Wicklow, which has little or no public...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Recent Meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council and the UN Security Council: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (9 Nov 2021)

John Brady: I thank the Minister for his opening statement and it is good to have him before the committee this evening. I concur with what he said about our staff, particularly those in New York who work for the Security Council. I, too, would like to be associated with his comments. The staff do exceptional work and are great representatives of Ireland. First, I wish to refer to Tigray and...

Sea-Fisheries (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Sep 2021)

John Brady: ...own they have ended up with this mess, which is a mess that was signed off on. They are now seriously out of pocket as a result of that. This has been brought up in Europe and has been backwards and forwards with different MEPs from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin all raising it, in fairness to them. The Fine Gael MEP, Seán Kelly, received correspondence on this from...

Defence (Amendment) Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (30 Jun 2021)

John Brady: I welcome these amendments, which Sinn Féin will support. We debated the issues extensively in committee and I commend the Minister on following through on what he said he would do by bringing forward the amendments. We know there are many challenges and difficulties within the Defence Forces. The Permanent Defence Force is well below the established figure of 9,500, with membership...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Revised)
Vote 28 - Department of Foreign Affairs (Revised)
(3 Jun 2021)

John Brady: ...it in respect of the Security Council? He might give a little more detail because while it is a welcome step, on its own it is meaningless unless we are willing and prepared to articulate our position and go forward in respect of the consequences for Israel of breaking international law. I would be interested to hear the Minister's view on that. As for overseas missions, I welcome the...

Annexation of Palestine: Motion [Private Members] (25 May 2021)

John Brady: ...magnitude of what we are on the cusp of achieving. We will become the first European country to formally acknowledge that the crime of annexation has taken place. The architecture of the Israeli Government strategy on the development of settlements signals the intention of making this a permanent fixture. The EU has talked about the need for Israel to avoid the red line of annexation...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Situation in Palestine: Discussion (Resumed) (18 May 2021)

John Brady: ...telling, given the backdrop to our meeting this morning where over 60 children have now been butchered in Gaza and more than 200 people killed in total. Of course, this piece of work has been ongoing over the last while and we have had a number of witnesses in at this point. What really spurred the committee into looking at this issue, prior to what is going on in Gaza and some of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU Protocol on Northern Ireland-Ireland: Engagement with the Minister for Foreign Affairs (27 Apr 2021)

John Brady: .... I agree with the Minister's comments on how the Good Friday Agreement is like our northern star and that it is critical we protect all the institutions. That must be foremost in all our actions going forward. The trade and cooperation agreement offers protections to the peace process by providing special status for the North. However, there is the question of the resulting democratic...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Commission on the Defence Forces: Discussion (20 Apr 2021)

John Brady: ...Forces, as well as the engagement of communities with the Defence Forces. My party colleague, Deputy Clarke, and I have made a submission on behalf of Sinn Féin. While I do not propose to go into all of the issues we raised within that submission, it covers many of the matters touched on my Mr. O'Driscoll, from the Reserve Defence Force to the role of women in our Defence Forces,...

Civil Registration (Right of Adoptees to Information) (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (10 Mar 2021)

John Brady: ...rights for adopted people. There have been a number of attempts to legislate in this area. However, instead of repairing the harm done by Ireland’s closed, secret adoption system, the Government’s efforts to legislate for adoption information have compounded the situation even further. This important legislation brought forward by my colleague, Deputy Funchion, will...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Distribution of Covid-19 Vaccines to Developing Countries: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)

John Brady: I thank all our guests for their very insightful contributions, containing important information and statistics that are shocking and alarming. As we face into the ongoing commitment for global solidarity and social justice, the contributions are very timely. Unfortunately, the big pharmaceutical companies continue to profiteer on the backs of people throughout the world. I believe one of...

Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2020: Committee and Remaining Stages (25 Nov 2020)

John Brady: The debate has been broadly good. It has been united, and that has certainly been my party's approach from the get-go. I concur with the comments from Deputy Howlin on some of the unfortunate scenes and developments during this debate. Let us not allow that to cloud the overall objective which was achieved. There is an opportunity to come back to what we have discussed. Our approach to...

Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2020: Committee and Remaining Stages (25 Nov 2020)

John Brady: Many of the points I had intended to make have been well-made by other speakers. I want to outline my approach and that of my party to the Brexit omnibus Bill. From the get-go, we endeavoured to work with the Government, put on the green jersey and get the Bill across the line because it was the right thing to do and it was necessary. There needed to be a consensus to show across the water...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Military Honours (17 Nov 2020)

John Brady: ...issue, in that it would not be looked at again. I welcome that the Minister has established the independent review group and some of the people who will sit on it. Ultimately, however, we need to go back to the initial recommendations for the 33 brave soldiers, which was put forward by the officer on the ground. I look forward to a successful outcome to this lengthy process and the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Foreign Affairs Council: Minister for Foreign Affairs (12 Nov 2020)

John Brady: ...Erekat, the general secretary of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. I expressed my condolences yesterday in the Chamber and I do so again. Dr. Erekat was certainly instrumental in bringing forward peaceful solutions, in trying to address the serious issues facing the Palestinian people, and in driving forward prospects of a two-state solution. I offer my condolences and those of...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Defence Forces Representative Organisations (8 Oct 2020)

John Brady: ...is this sector has no input into national pay agreements and must take the agreement or leave it, unlike other workers who are allowed have representatives around the table. An argument put forward is that it would be completely wrong if members of the Defence Forces, having associated with ICTU, might go on strike. That red herring has been put forward time and again. PDFORRA has...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Examination of HIQA Report on the Impact of Covid-19 on Nursing Homes in Ireland (10 Sep 2020)

John Brady: I believe that was in my constituency. I will not name the nursing home but it was closed down under section 64 of the Health Act 2007. In that situation, measures put forward by HIQA and the HSE were not enacted. Why was that particular case so severe the HSE had to go to Bray District Court to get an order to close down that nursing home? Why would a situation like that arise?

Defence (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage (8 Sep 2020)

John Brady: ...indiscriminately inflict violence upon the Palestinian people, including children, from the failure of the international community to hold them to account. I wish to conclude on the amendment which the Minister is going to bring forward to remove the provision for the re-enlistment of former enlisted persons because that has become part of other legislation.
