Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: I have a comment on section 13. I can speak about it when we get to it. As the Minister of State can see, I am substituting for Deputy Cullinane. It gives the right of entry to the unregistered centres and it empowers a chief inspector with a right of entry for registered centres. I have a query for the Minister of State. Has she considered expanding the legal right of entry to social...

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: I will respond to what the Minister of State said. There was a proposal for a pilot scheme on mental health in Limerick, where a mental health nurse would be in an ambulance going to people who had mental health episodes, due to the thousands of call-outs gardaí have to make every year. Twelve months on from when the pilot scheme was supposed to have been introduced, there is still no...

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: Does the Minister of State have any idea when the pilot is likely to start?

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: If there has been an admission of liability, can the families not be given the money to help them progress their case?

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: I wish to advise that we may table amendments on Report Stage.

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: There has been a previous concern. I noticed that in County Kerry that the Cois na Féile service has been closed down, which is a big disappointment for the families who used the facility. A concern had been flagged by HIQA that its enforcement powers were too blunt, that the introduction of compliance notices would be a welcome step so that the nuclear option of closure would not have...

Select Committee on Health: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Committee Stage (12 Jun 2024)

Pa Daly: That is noted.

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Closed-Circuit Television Systems (30 May 2024)

Pa Daly: 220. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality when she expects the installation of the CCTV project that was sought for three schemes (details supplied) in Killarney, County Kerry, with particular emphasis on scheme 2; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24455/24]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons (Amendment) Bill 2021 (28 May 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons (Amendment) Bill 2021 (28 May 2024)

Pa Daly: That is okay. I will just ask a few questions then. I understand Deputy O'Callaghan's point about sending a strong message from the Oireachtas on knife crime. My only concern is how effective it is going to be. I have a couple of questions. Does he know what percentage of cases are dealt with on indictment because usually when they are dealt with on indictment, there would be another...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons (Amendment) Bill 2021 (28 May 2024)

Pa Daly: To reiterate, the point is that when the maximum penalty was increased, it could not be dealt with on indictment until 2009, if my memory is correct. Mr. O'Neill will probably be able to tell me. That does not seem to have had the desired effect. It would be my concern that the number carrying knives has increased rather than decreased. The intention behind the penalty, reducing the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons (Amendment) Bill 2021 (28 May 2024)

Pa Daly: Maybe we should be focusing our attention on youth work, the closure of youth centres and investment in communities, as much as on this. I do remember the cases that were dealt with while we were in the conference centre. Certainly, there was a charge of murder in one of them.

Pa Daly: 338. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if she would consider allowing the spouses of non-EU PhD students the right to work where they hold a stamp 2A permission. [23847/24]

Dentistry Services: Motion (22 May 2024)

Pa Daly: I thank the Social Democrats and Deputy Shortall for bringing this motion. It typifies the lack of attention and lack of care of the Minister that he is not here to address this. If I thought he was away negotiating with the HSE or working on a dental Bill, that would be one thing, but we can be sure that he is not. The state of dental services, particularly for children and the elderly,...

Housing for All: Statements (Resumed) (21 May 2024)

Pa Daly: Probably 60% of the representations that we receive in our office have to do with housing. This week alone, I dealt with a woman from west Kerry who could not afford housing in Dingle because much of it costs approximately €350,000, a couple from Kerry whose rent had doubled over the past four years, a woman who had been on the housing list for 16 years and was living in a small room...
