Seanad: Order of Business (30 Sep 2015)

Mary White: I raised the issue of inheritance tax in the Seanad a number of months ago and have had many conversations with people who are affected by the tax in the Dublin Rathdown constituency in which I live. Many residents have expressed anger at the current penal inheritance tax regime and have shown grave concern at the manner in which grieving families are being treated as a result.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Sep 2015)

Mary White: On 25 August there was standing room only at a public meeting I organised in Mount Merrion community centre entitled, "Cut the Inheritance Tax", where attendees asked for an urgent review of the tax. Ireland has one of the harshest inheritance tax regimes in the world, with Dubliners in particular heavily penalised by the tax. In 2014 Revenue collected €168.3 million inheritance tax...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Sep 2015)

Mary White: I call on the Minister, Deputy Noonan, to address this issue immediately. This tax is wrong. It is unfair and it has already been abolished in numerous countries, such as Austria, Norway and Sweden, as it is deemed to be double taxation. Ireland needs to follow suit urgently.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Cancer Screening Programmes (29 Sep 2015)

Mary White: I thank the Cathaoirleach for giving me the opportunity to raise this critical issue. I welcome the Minister, Deputy Varadkar, and am pleased to be able to raise the critical issue of the rolling out of the free BreastCheck screening for women between the ages of 65 and 69. Since the introduction and publication of my first policy paper, A New Approach to Ageing and Ageism, in 2006 I have...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Cancer Screening Programmes (29 Sep 2015)

Mary White: To be honest, I took at face value what the Minister said on the day I met him. I believed that he would roll it out quickly. I will ask one question before pointing out another issue relating to BreastCheck. How many women in the final quarter will be able to avail of the free BreastCheck exam? A serious matter was drawn to my attention by a woman at the weekend. She is not able to...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Cancer Screening Programmes (29 Sep 2015)

Mary White: This woman said she would pay for a breast exam but she wanted to have it done in the facility where she had free exams up to the age of 64. She was told she could not do that. It is unbelievable how this country can be run in silos. She was willing to pay money to BreastCheck, and the medical personnel could have examined all of her screenings to date. She would have liked to have been...

My presentation was unanimously accepted by the membership of the...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Sep 2015)

Mary White: What is happening at the moment is very worrying. Many Irish potential entrepreneurs are leaving to set up businesses in the UK and the United States because of our horrendous 33% capital acquisitions tax.
