Seanad: Finance Bill 2003 [ Certified Money Bill ] : Committee and Remaining Stages. (26 Mar 2003)

Mary White: When I was a member of a Fianna Fáil think tank, I suggested that Senator O'Rourke's former Department should be called the Department of Public Enterprise to emphasise that, like businesses, the State must be enterprising in its approach. I disagree with Senator McDowell's suggestion that the best people leave the public service. Many are not in a position to leave because of mortgage or...

Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Apr 2003)

Mary White: That is right.

Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Apr 2003)

Mary White: I call on the Leader to arrange a debate on the North when she considers it appropriate. I have been actively involved with all sides of the community in Northern Ireland since 1993 when I was elected to the national executive of Fianna Fáil. Listening to and dialogue with both sides of the community are critical until peace has been consolidated and secured. I would like Senator Ross to...

Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2003: Second Stage (Resumed). (1 Apr 2003)

Mary White: I would just like the Minister of State to look at me when I am speaking. I am sorry but I am just being honest with him. I would like him to listen because I will only contribute for about one minute.

Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2003: Second Stage (Resumed). (1 Apr 2003)

Mary White: As the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government, Deputy Gallagher, could deliver value for money based on this motor taxation increase, he should get that message across by improving sign-posting, which is generally dismal. Recently I drove 200 miles across England and even in foggy and misty conditions we were able to get from Penzance to Bristol due to...

Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Apr 2003)

Mary White: Two weeks ago the Minister for Finance, Deputy McCreevy, was present when we dealt with the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill. I ask the Leader to advise when he will return so that we can thank him for agreeing not to substitute the word "contain" for the words "relate to" in section 6(5)(b) of the principal Act, as was proposed here. The One in Four group had serious concerns with...

Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Apr 2003)

Mary White: One of the most contentious issues in the Bill was the possible suppression of information relating to people who had been sexually abused. The Minister has now conceded on this point. It shows what a mighty man he is, given that he was not too proud to take this course of action. It is worth noting how we in the Seanad were able to contribute to that during our debate two weeks ago.

Seanad: Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq: Statements. (2 Apr 2003)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Apr 2003)

Mary White: Will the Leader ensure that we can have a continuing debate on Iraq during the course of this brutal war that is taking place? I did not contribute to the debate yesterday but I wish to compliment all those from both sides of the House who did. As the Leader said, there was consensus, which is what we want to achieve on this issue. We should have such a debate on a weekly basis so that we can...

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Apr 2003)

Mary White: Yes.

Seanad: Crime Levels: Statements. (3 Apr 2003)

Mary White: I am probably treading on dangerous ground in what I am about to say. However, if I do not speak out here, I might as well stay at home. In 50 years, we will look back on our society and consider it barbaric. It is a source of constant pain to me that most of the people in our prisons are poor. People are born into poverty, dysfunctional families and drink and drugs problems. It is very...

Seanad: Crime Levels: Statements. (3 Apr 2003)

Mary White: I am telling the truth. I believe in the Minister, but there must be reform.
