Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: Senator Darragh O'Brien and many other Senators raised the proposed sale of the State's stake in Aer Lingus. The neck of Fianna Fáil with regard to Aer Lingus never ceases to amaze me. As has been correctly pointed out, a previous Fianna Fáil-led Government sold 74.9% of the State's stake in the company in 2006. Senator Ó Murchú described the proposed deal as the sale...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: Senator Darragh O'Brien has a habit of interrupting practically every speaker. He was not interrupted once and it is about time he listened rather than chirping in with comments all the time.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: He will have answers to his questions.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: That all the airports involved in the operation of the Heathrow slots have welcomed the proposed deal is an indication of the confidence they have in the guarantee. No such guarantee is in place at present. The Government has secured a seven-year guarantee on the slots. It has also been in contact with the European Commission on the legal mechanisms provided and has received indications...

Maurice Cummins: I have not yet had a response from the Minister's office.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: If it can be facilitated, we will have that debate at 9 this evening.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: As soon as I have word, everybody else - certainly the leaders of the groups - will be informed.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: Senator O'Brien and quite a number of other Members spoke about the ban on corporal punishment, calling for a debate. We will certainly try to arrange such a debate with the Minister. While Aer Lingus and the issue of corporal punishment were the main issues raised here this morning, other issues have also been raised. Senator Burke welcomed the good results that have been published on...

Seanad: Springboard Programme: Motion (27 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: County Louth is well served, with three speakers having spoken on the motion. Dundalk IT is obviously doing wonderful work where Springboard is concerned. I recently read in a local newspaper a headline suggesting that the Government was massaging the live register figures because there was a 300% increase in people on Government schemes. The information came from a press release from an...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 May 2015)

Seanad: Order of Business (13 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: Senator Darragh O'Brien asked about next week. The House will not be sitting next week. As the Senator mentioned, the Dáil will be sitting on Tuesday, but this House will not be sitting. It will sit the following week. The local property tax will be reviewed in June and July. We will certainly consider the Thornhill report for debate if it is published before it goes to the...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: I assure Senator O'Brien that I have made a request to the Minister to come into the House to discuss nursing and maternity services in Irish hospitals. I hope the Minister will accede to that request in early course. On that matter, yesterday Senator Bacik raised the question of maternity services, as did other Senators. I have made that request to the Minister for Health. Senators Bacik...

Seanad: Legal Services Regulation Bill 2011: Second Stage (13 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister to the House. This Bill is long overdue. It is essential that the new legal services regulatory authority is up and running as a matter of urgency. The delivery and enactment of this Bill remains the subject of a country-specific recommendation under the EU semester process which has succeeded the troika programme. I welcome the fact that the European Commission...

Seanad: Legal Services Regulation Bill 2011: Second Stage (13 May 2015)

Seanad: Order of Business (12 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: Senator Mooney raised the issue of the provision of a cath lab in Sligo Regional Hospital. I am acutely aware of the problems relating to CAT labs because there is only one in Waterford but there is a need to staff a second lab. The Senator is correct that if people have a heart attack, there is a 90-minute window. Sligo is a case in point but if people have a heart attack in Waterford...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: Senator D'Arcy called for the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Flanagan, to come to the House to debate the results of the UK elections and the elections in Northern Ireland. He also mentioned the offensive sectarian leaflets distributed by a Sinn Féin candidate during the elections. There is no place for this type of sectarianism in Irish politics, be it North or South.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 May 2015)

Maurice Cummins: As he mentioned, the leaflet is totally against republican ideals. Senator O'Donovan spoke about Irish nurses, who are front-line staff. I understand that recruitment of nurses has recommenced, particularly in specialised areas. We will try to bring the Minister to the House to debate the question of resources in the health services, particularly nurses, non-consultant hospital doctors and...
