Seanad: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Motion (27 Apr 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Richmond, and thank him for his time at the Oireachtas meeting yesterday and in the Chamber today. As has been outlined by most Senators, including Senator Ahearn, it is very positive to see collective bargaining continuing to work in the construction sector. We all need the sector to be as healthy as possible, given our reliance on it to face some of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Apr 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Cathaoirleach and I also welcome the ladies, who are from mighty hurling country in Thurles. I first wish to comment on and welcome the housing announcement yesterday by the Minister, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, and the Government. This represents a €1 billion increase in funding to build more social, affordable and sustainable homes and to enable more people to own their own...

Seanad: Public Water Connection Charges: Motion (26 Apr 2023)

Ollie Crowe: My colleague Senator Fitzpatrick has outlined our position. I have a couple of queries. I commend Senator Garvey and her colleagues on bringing the motion forward. I think all Members across the House welcome it. We need to expand the scheme as quickly as possible. I am familiar with the area around Milltown, County Galway. The reaction to this measure from people there has been...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Mar 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Cathaoirleach. This morning I raise the issue in this House on the sentences being handed down by our courts. In the past week we have had two shocking examples. In the first case a man, who took part in a savage attack on a young woman which resulted in her being blinded in one eye, was given a four and a half year sentence. I realise the disappointment which was felt across...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Mar 2023)

Ollie Crowe: The main point I am making is that the sentences need to be at a certain level and that has not been happening in cases over the past number of months and years. It is important, as Members of the Seanad Éireann and of the Oireachtas, that we send out the right message that overall, the decisions that are being highlighted are having a significant impact across society. I certainly...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Mar 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the details of the groundbreaking new scheme announced by the Minister for Education, Deputy Foley, this morning. There was information previously in the budget but not the finer details of the scheme, which will provide free schoolbooks in primary schools and special schools. More than 558,000 pupils are enrolled in approximately 3,230 primary schools, including over 130 special...

Seanad: Remuneration Information and Pay Transparency Bill 2023: Second Stage (28 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister, Deputy O'Gorman, to the Chamber. The Remuneration Information and Pay Transparency Bill will level the playing field for jobseekers. As my colleague Senator Ardagh outlined, it can make a significant difference in helping to close the gender pay gap. Even more broadly, however, it will level the playing field for all employees, regardless of gender. The Bill puts...

Seanad: Report on Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Ireland's Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Motion (22 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Catherine Martin, to the House and thank her for her strong voice on the 9% VAT rate campaign, which was vital to the hospitality sector, not alone in Galway but across the country. I have got very positive feedback on that over the past 24 to 48 hours. I welcome this topic. It is one which, it goes without saying, is vital to hundreds of thousands of workers...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank all of our guests for attending and for their contributions. Dr. Tamming referenced the current rate of employment of disabled people across the public sector is 3.6% and that 27 out of 213 public bodies did not reach the minimum target. I find it unacceptable that 12.5% of the public bodies did not reach the minimum target. I am fairly familiar with the situation myself. I have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank Dr. Hartney. Is there a breakdown of the type of disabilities in the public sector? Of course, we want to meet the targets but we also want to do it in a way that gives as many people as possible an opportunity to work. We do not want a situation where certain disabilities are being hired at a high rate while people with other disabilities are not being hired at all.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank Dr. Hartney and Dr. Tamming.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank Ms Shakespeare. In Galway, my home city, I am familiar with employers leading the way that are involved in partnership, for example, Tesco and Eye Cinema. I suppose I am asking in relation to the take-up of other companies and what is done to encourage other private companies to come on board to lead the way as Tesco Ireland is doing. That is prevalent in Galway city. I commend...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: With the agreement of the members I will let Deputy James O'Connor go first. He is a member of the committee also. We will have five minutes at the end and I will then go in the middle if that is agreeable.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Acting Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: I will be brief. I have just two questions as I am conscious Deputy Cahill, as Chair of the agriculture committee, wants to come in. A number of companies might find this model more suitable but will probably need to be informed and educated about the possibilities and advantages of the transition, when it comes about. What are our guests' views on how we should address this? The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: Okay. I wish to hand over to Deputy Cahill.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: To get the views in regard to making the audit either a three-year or five-year requirement, what are the views of the guests in regard to mine and Deputy Cahill's point on that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: Surely they have their opinion. That is why we are here, to tease it out and go through it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Feb 2023)

Ollie Crowe: Like all Members, I join the Acting Leader in offering my support to the people of Türkiye and Syria following the devastating earthquake. Galway, the city in particular, has considerable Turkish and Syrian communities which are reeling from this tragedy. I welcome the announcement of financial aid by the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and the ongoing support his...
