Post-European Council Meeting: Statements (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: I too am glad to get the opportunity to talk about this very serious matter that is happening in the world today and especially in the Middle East. I say to the Minister of State that we must ensure that we continue to be neutral. Indeed, our voices must be heard at European level asking for peace and that the ceasefire happens there right away. It is very wrong that people, civilians and...

Post-European Council Meeting: Statements (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: Whatever side they have been kidnapped by or whatever, it is the Israelis' remit to ensure the safety home of these people. They have the deciding of it. I ask the Minister of State to mind this lady here and tell her she is quite welcome here and ask her to ensure the safe return home of our people. It is of paramount importance to me that the people from Ireland who are out there come...

Danny Healy-Rae: It was the Labour Party.

Home Care Workers and Home Support Scheme: Motion [Private Members] (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: First, I thank Labour for putting forward this very important motion today. Since I came up here, one of the things I have been consistently raising is the fact that we need more home helps and people need to be helped to stay in their homes as long as possible. They treat going into nursing homes as being the departure lounge and they feel they still have a chance if they stay at home. I...

Home Care Workers and Home Support Scheme: Motion [Private Members] (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: Doctors used to refer patients to the district hospital if they had a serious cold or whatever. The only way that they can get into the district or community hospital now is through University Hospital Kerry. I think that area needs to be visited because when people want a bit of help, they have to go through this rigmarole of having to go into the general hospital first.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: I welcome the witnesses to the committee. We are sorry they have had to come in here because of their plight. It is something with which I can very much empathise. Indeed, when I highlighted other rivers in County Kerry, I always mentioned the fact that the Shannon had not been cleaned out or dredged since it was last done by the English in the 1880s. Likewise in Kerry, we have several...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: I am sorry. I would like the lads to answer. It does not help the fish to keep them in the dark with no sunlight getting to them. I am with the Save Our Shannon Organisation 100%; we understand what is wrong. I heard the witness say towns are in someway being seen to after but farmers are not properly being seen to after. They will get compensation for one year, maybe, even though that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Rights-Based Care for People with Disabilities: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: I thank the witnesses for being here. I was listening to them on the television in my office. Since I have come down, I heard Dr. Hillery talking about mental health and that we need another regulator. I would say to Dr. Hillery that I think we have enough regulators but we need services. In Kerry, we certainly do not have adequate mental health residential care. Again this week, there...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Rights-Based Care for People with Disabilities: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: Could I just say to Dr. Hillery that one size does not fit all.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Rights-Based Care for People with Disabilities: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: Where we are in Beaufort is central to all of Kerry. It might not be exactly near the people in Tarbert or wherever, but for this type of person – they do want to be called patients – the best treatment they can get is in a place like St. Mary of the Angels. If they need to be in separate units, we should build separate units on the campus where all the expert staff, who are...

Housing: Motion [Private Members] (7 Nov 2023)

Danny Healy-Rae: I would add to that by asking what business do we have inviting people here or taking them at will when we cannot house our own people? A total of 1,000 people or more are coming into the country every week. I am calling for a cap on that and for us to look after our own first. We are doing very little or not enough for people on the housing list. If they do get a council house or one...
