Seanad: Seanad Bill 2020: Second Stage (18 Nov 2020)

Paddy Burke: The Minister of State has a lot of food for thought regarding how we should go forward and many issues to consider. I wish him well over the next 12 months and I look forward to him coming back to the House before Christmas next year.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Perjury and Related Offences) Bill 2018: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (15 Jun 2021)

Paddy Burke: I join other Members of the House in congratulating the former Senator, Pádraig Ó Céidigh, for starting and bringing forward this legislation, which has gone through the other House with amendments, which are now before us. I would like to ask the Minister of State about some of the issues that were mentioned by Senator Martin. I agree with the Senator that perjury is already...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Implementing Housing for All: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Jan 2023)

Paddy Burke: I have two further questions. The first relates to anomalies in the planning laws. There can be shortcomings or whatever in legislation and regulations that are brought forward. There does not seem to be any great feedback from local authorities to say that there is an anomaly and that when the Department is rectifying the position, it should take a certain course of action. There are two...

Seanad: Reopening Ireland (Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment): Statements (26 Nov 2020)

Paddy Burke: ...which downsized or eventually closed and had to pay redundancy to their staff. The Redundancy Payments Act 2003 mandated that an employer must pay two weeks wages per year of service to all staff, going back to whenever they started, which could be back in the 1970s, 1980s or whenever. The result is that many businesspeople, sole traders or self-employed people are now facing the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Nov 2023)

Paddy Burke: ...in full flight in this House, there are none better than the Senator. He is so entertaining. I do not think this Chamber will see the likes of him again. He is unbelievable. I compliment the Government on bringing forward an increased cost of business grant. I hope it will be brought in efficiently and will go directly to businesspeople. Many small businesses are in a lot of...

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (17 Dec 2010)

Paddy Burke: Before going through the sections I welcome the Minister and wish the Cathaoirleach, Members and staff of the Houses a very happy and safe Christmas. I thank everybody for their co-operation during 2010 and we look forward to 2011.

Paddy Burke: Is there a use for bonded warehouses going forward?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Brexit - Recent Developments and Future Negotiations: Discussion (Resumed) (25 May 2017)

Paddy Burke: Is the Chairman not going forward again?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Water and Energy Connections in Rural Areas: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Paddy Burke: If there is a village that has no sewerage or wastewater provision, who would put forward a proposal in that regard? Would it be the local authorities? How does Uisce Éireann receive the inquiry? Who then decides if the work should go ahead and who should bear the cost of it?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Jun 2023)

Paddy Burke: ...the Cathaoirleach. I also want to wish Councillors Hoare and Carroll the very best of luck in the next 12 months. They will have a joint civic reception for all of the Mayo people who will be going to Pearse Stadium next Sunday in their droves. We will look forward to that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues Affecting the Aviation Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Nov 2020)

Paddy Burke: ...of nearly €4 million. At what point does the airport break even? Does the airport still need to reach 500,000 or 800,000 passengers to get to that point or does Mr. Gilmore still see losses going forward for the next number of years up to 2024 to 2025?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Central Bank of Ireland (20 Dec 2016)

Paddy Burke: ...the aftermath of the crisis, it is starting to expand again. This trend may be reinforced by Brexit. I see that the Central Bank itself is setting up its own Brexit unit. How will the Brexit unit go forward?

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2021: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2021)

Paddy Burke: Some counties have their development plans finished and they may not come up again for another four or five years. In the meantime, this land may well be suitable for housing. How can they go about it rather than the local authority CEO bringing forward a variation of the plan? Would the Department have an input into it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Irish Banking Culture Board: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)

Paddy Burke: ...committee. Were there any objections from any of the banks that have signed up to this? Does any bank want a different format, or were they all in agreement that this is the way it should be going forward?

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2016)

Paddy Burke: I think it should be brought forward to August. Children now go back to school in August, which is earlier than they used to go back to school. This year, there was much more rapid growth in August than there was in other years. I think the Minister has to look at this from a road safety point of view. There is a need for better co-ordination between local authorities and the ESB and the...

Seanad: Business of Seanad (9 Apr 2014)

Paddy Burke: ...her group of students from the Convent of Mercy in Carrick-on-Suir. Councillor Greene has been a regular visitor to the Public Gallery with student groups over the years. I understand she is not going forward for election on this occasion. We wish her well in the future.

Paddy Burke: ...sentiment with him, it will be a great place to start from with this Bill. If he meets the farming organisations, I have no doubt he will bring them with him and win the day. They know there is going to be change. It is ironic that we are debating this on a day when two important reports came out. One is a report by Dr. John Bradley on the Atlantic rail corridor from Galway to Mayo,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jun 2023)

Paddy Burke: ...many cases where we have developments with a first, second and third phase those doing the building in the first stage can create a problem for the those working in the third stage if they do not go ahead with the development. Mr. Cussen was able to tell us there may a way around this. If a certain length of time is given to carry out the first stage and those involved are not prepared...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Tracker Mortgages: Bank of Ireland (30 Jan 2018)

Paddy Burke: ...bank used its position to change the rates. How do we guarantee it will not happen again and that we will not get into the same position we were in where the bank may not be able to fund itself going forward and might have to change the rates again?

Seanad: Immigration Bill, 2002: Committee Stage. (18 Dec 2002)

Paddy Burke: The Minister said that Ireland is the only country in the European Union that does not have carrier liability legislation. I thought this Bill was brought forward by the Minister, but it obviously emanates from Europe. Is it fair to suggest that EU laws apply to Irish carriers like Ryanair and Aer Lingus going to other European countries such as Spain and France on routes such as Dublin to Malaga?
