Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Dormant Accounts Fund Management (8 Nov 2018)

Seán Canney: I would be delighted to attend the committee. I was a member of it for 18 months and would be delighted to go back to talk to its members. It is important that I do so and try to come up with solutions to issues. I look forward to doing so.

Other Questions: Drainage Schemes (24 Nov 2016)

Seán Canney: ...several questions. He asked about the minor works scheme. I do not have that information to hand but I can find it out for the Deputy. As I said previously, the CFRAM programme is the way forward. It identifies the 300 areas of risk. There is close co-operation between the Rivers Agency and the OPW. The Office of Public Works has a role to play. It is normally the lead agency...

Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998 and Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009: Motions (27 Jun 2023)

Seán Canney: I welcome the Minister back to the Chamber and thank her for bringing forward this very important motion. I have listened to a lot of the speakers today. There are lots of things going on and lots of things being discussed but at the end of the day we are talking about law and order in our country. The first point I would make is that we needed this emergency legislation during the...

Covid-19 Vaccine Roll-out: Statements (27 May 2021)

Seán Canney: In the remaining time I wish to go back to the TAPS issue. I am concerned that if we have a cliff edge scenario, bearing in mind what we have been through, and what the Minister of State described, nursing homes will be in an at-risk situation again. We have to be very careful about that. Given the work the nursing homes have done, we need to support them because they will doing a lot more...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(22 Jun 2016)

Seán Canney: During the period of public consultations, there were objections to the proposals for Clontarf. That delayed the whole process. On the question of whether we were going backwards, we may not have been making moving forward, but I am looking at ways to ensure that we progress without delay. The significant regulations that are built around projects create major delays that are not acceptable.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Community Development Projects (14 Oct 2021)

Seán Canney: My question relates to women's sheds. I have been contacted by a group of women in Tuam who want to set up a women's shed. They want to know where to go to get State support. Men's sheds groups have been successful throughout the country and have been strongly supported by the Department. In that context, we should consider supporting women's sheds. I look forward to the Minister's response.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Community Development Projects (15 Sep 2022)

Seán Canney: I thank the Minister of State and acknowledge that a lot of support has been going into community groups over the years. It is important this continues. With the unprecedented level of increase that is happening in trying to keep community groups and facilities open and running between heating, lighting, insurance and the cost of buying materials to maintain these facilities, it is...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2017
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(15 Feb 2017)

Seán Canney: ...we are dealing with leases coming up and being ahead of the game. The way we are managing estates is being dealt with in the report and there is a full list of all of the Government buildings. Going forward, we will be smarter in our approach to these kind of things. I will not comment on the sale by NAMA because I was not there. The figure being reported is €70 million but...

Reopening Schools and Leaving Certificate Examinations: Statements (3 Mar 2021)

Seán Canney: ...investment and I hope it will be opened in the coming weeks. It is a great ray of hope for parents, children, families and staff in Tuam. I compliment everybody involved in the project. I look forward to seeing the school up and running. I had a sneak preview of the layout of the school and it is ideal for education in these Covid times. I look forward to the school opening. In...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Financial Implications of the Petroleum and Other Minerals (Amendment) (Climate Emergency Measures) Bill 2018: Discussion (11 Jun 2019)

Seán Canney: ...I had concerns in that regard. I am delighted to talk to committee members about the Bill. I have listened to their discussion. As I said, the Bill is well intentioned, but it is being brought forward on its own without a full plan for how we will do things. We have to accept that we have a long-term challenge that we need to meet to achieve a net carbon neutral economy. We should...

Credit Union (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (3 Nov 2021)

Seán Canney: I compliment Deputy Harkin on bringing forward this very timely Bill. I am very disappointed at the Minister of State's reply. To defer this for nine months is not the way to do this business. During the week - I think it was last Monday - we were at the launch of the Greenify home improvement loan product by some credit unions. The Minister of State was there and spoke. It was very...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report on National Development Plan: Economic and Social Research Institute (31 Jan 2024)

Seán Canney: ...projects and when they can be delivered. When there is a national development plan and money for projects, there should be a project delivery plan. We should be looking at what projects are ready to go to ground now and get done, whether that project is a railway line, such as the western rail corridor, a road, a sewerage treatment plant or whatever. With the national development plan,...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Budget Priorities Exiting Covid-19 Pandemic: Discussion (3 Jun 2021)

Seán Canney: To come back on that, I know the houses in Ballymun have been delivered. I am talking about the here and now and going forward. There is inflation in construction. A quotation for the price of materials will only last seven days. The cost of materials is going up exponentially right now for three reasons: a lack of supply of native timber; Brexit; and supply chain issues due to the Covid...

Extension of the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2021: Motion (24 May 2023)

Seán Canney: .... We brought in this because of a particular circumstance and to help the hospitality sector. It is important we get it right for the future so that we do not end up having an ad hocarrangement going forward. One of the points I would like to address in particular is the idea that where outdoor dining is taking up foothpaths and public spaces that, we also take into account and bear in...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Post-budget 2023 Examination: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Seán Canney: ...out to do the business and how we are setting out to put in our infrastructure. We should have a lot more discussion on these kinds of things because we must come to some conclusions at some stage on how we are going to move forward. We must be brave and have a vision that we are going to try it. There was mention of companies failing. I do not think companies fail. They just try...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Indexation of Taxation and Social Protection System: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Feb 2022)

Seán Canney: ...here about the pension age and increasing the pension age. There are several scenarios in front of us. The current pension age is 66 and we are discussing whether we should increase that going forward or whether we should increase the PRSI levy to pay for the pension deficit that may be there in future. Interestingly, Mr. Johnson said that because the UK increased the retirement age...

Irish Apprenticeship System: Statements (26 May 2022)

Seán Canney: ...formal qualifications required, and when the boom ended, we found many workers did not have the necessary qualifications. Coupled with that, many parents did not consider an apprenticeship a way forward for their children. Most parents aspire to the highest level of education for their children and may have thought that would always be in third level rather than in an apprenticeship, but...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Post-budget 2023 Examination: Discussion (Resumed) (26 Oct 2022)

Seán Canney: ...the witnesses for their presentations. The amount of money involved in the budget can be overwhelming. When you read documents and reports, you get confused. I am concerned when Revenue bring forward a set of figures that are different from the Department's set of figures and are working from a different base. There needs to be common approach to how reporting is done, be it from...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Aligning Disability Services with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Nov 2021)

Seán Canney: ...the lead on the issue. When will we have a new scheme in place? That is what the Ombudsman is seeking. We need to get a new scheme up and running. There are discussions about the other scheme going on between the Department of Finance and the Department of Health, but is the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth involved as well? Which Department is...
