Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Digital Services Bill 2023: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)

David Stanton: I notice that the UK is bringing forward similar legislation. The UK is our near neighbour. There is such an overlap between what it does and what we do, but it is not in the European Union anymore so this legislation will not affect it. A lot of the stuff it does comes across here. How will that relationship work under this legislation or going forward?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Report on Human Trafficking: Scoil Phobail Bhéara (2 Apr 2014)

David Stanton: Before we go on to the next speaker I propose that the work would be forwarded to the Minister for his comments and attention. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Parental Leave (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

David Stanton: If the committee puts the question "That section 3 stand part of the Bill." and we all agree that it does not, then it does not go forward.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2023: Discussion (30 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I am sure there will be tonnes of consultation on this as we go forward-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Small Companies Administrative Rescue Process: Discussion (8 May 2024)

David Stanton: Maybe as awareness grows more companies will avail of SCARP. Are there many people who inquire about SCARP and then do not go forward with it?

Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Parental Leave (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

David Stanton: We are in the hands of the committee on this, but when the Bill as proposed has a built-in flaw, which we have identified, we cannot actually allow the section to go forward. It is not possible to do it, because it deletes something which is not in the Bill.

Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Gender Pay Gap Information Bill 2019: Committee Stage (27 Jun 2019)

David Stanton: We have yet to go through Report Stage and so on here in the Dáil. The requirement is that companies initially with 250 or more employees will carry out a wage survey and publish that, and that will be mandatory. Over time we will learn from larger companies. We have engaged with the unions and employers and everyone is in agreement that this is the way to go. The larger companies...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Experience of Persons of Mixed Race in State Institutions: Mixed Race Irish (22 Oct 2014)

David Stanton: We will bring this discussion, if colleagues are in agreement, to the attention of the Minister and forward the transcripts and so on also. Thank you very much for being here today. We will now go into private session for a few minutes to discuss some housekeeping matters. Hopefully we will not be too long.

National Minimum Wage (Protection of Employee Tips) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (18 Jun 2019)

David Stanton: ...is unlikely that the State could provide the level of inspection required for enforcement to be effective. The Minister, Deputy Regina Doherty, is proposing a better alternative. She wants to put forward a payment of wages (amendment) Bill. She wants to bring transparency in the form of prominently displayed notices in business premises. On that we are agreed. I was struck when I...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Funding (30 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I want to ask about the many new developments being built around the country. There are a lot of houses going up but there is very little forward planning with regard to resources such as community facilities and playing fields. It is very expensive for clubs to purchase land. Perhaps it is something the Minister of State would have a look at and consider with his Government colleagues.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Childcare Services (30 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for his response and congratulate him on the work that is going on there. If I am correct, the current schemes only support expansions, not startups. If somebody wants to start from scratch and build a childcare facility, is there any support for that? Has the Minister asked the local childcare committees to conduct an assessment of local need? If not, will he do so...

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jul 2021)

David Stanton: I was involved in driving the recognition of ethnicity five years ago and it is disappointing, as was said earlier, that more has not progressed since then. That was a major step and I remember the night in the Dáil when everybody stood up and applauded. It was seen as a big step forward and we can still build on that. We should all take serious note of what my friend and colleague,...

Topical Issue Debate: Direct Provision System (4 Oct 2017)

David Stanton: ...appeals process possible. They still have not proven their right to be here. Deputy O'Sullivan also mentioned people in direct provision who have status and leave to remain. I have met many NGOs and other groups and we are doing everything we can to get accommodation for the people in question. We want to help them move on with their lives. As I mentioned earlier, everybody who comes...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Civil Defence Bill 2023: Committee Stage (28 Mar 2023)

David Stanton: ...significant impact on members of Civil Defence, who are highly qualified, and they are very worried about it. We are discussing the Civil Defence Bill, which is why I raised it here. I may bring forward an amendment on the issue on Report Stage unless the Minister of State has a response for me by then, whether from himself or his colleagues. This issue has been going on for three years...

Sugar Industry. (22 Jun 2005)

David Stanton: .... There are 350 of my constituents working in the Mallow sugar plant and those jobs are at risk. The situation is serious and the Minister must do her utmost to ensure these proposals do not go forward. If the price is cut, the price to the producer will not necessarily fall — we saw what happened with coffee. The middleman will benefit from this. Sugar is worth €70 million to farmers...

Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2007: Report and Final Stages (21 Mar 2007)

David Stanton: ...on this matter. No discussion has taken place and they have not been consulted. I worry when I hear the Minister say there is nothing to fear. Need I say more. I urge the Minister not to go forward with this Schedule to the Bill. He should continue meeting those involved in an atmosphere of goodwill and not have this issue hanging over them like the sword of Damocles. He should...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Firearms Licences: (Resumed) Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

David Stanton: The suggestion of creating a centralised licensing authority has been put forward by a number of speakers. Perhaps the witnesses could give us some idea of how they think that might work. We do not have time to go into great detail today, but perhaps the witnesses would come back to us at a later stage with their thoughts on that. I must point out that this is an all-party parliamentary...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Estimates for Public Services 2015: Vote 35 - Army Pensions and Vote 36 - Defence (30 Sep 2015)

David Stanton: Before we go on to that we already wrote to the Minister commending the Naval Service personnel and the work they are doing in the Mediterranean. The committee was unanimous in its support of that. On behalf of colleagues, I also wish the retired Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Conor O'Boyle, well in his retirement and welcome the new Chief of Staff to his position today and wish him...

Greyhound Industry (Doping Regulation) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (8 Jun 2006)

David Stanton: ...to put this Bill before the House. This should be noted, as doubts have been raised with regard to the industry. The Dalton report, mentioned not by Deputy Deenihan initially but ad nauseam by the Government, has put a cloud of doubt over the industry. This must be lifted. The best way to do that is with this Bill. I am amazed the Government, and the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism in...

Seanad: Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Bill 2019: Second Stage (16 Apr 2019)

David Stanton: ...and Lotteries Act 1956. As Senator Conway-Walsh said, it is time to update this outdated law. Of that there is no doubt. Everyone commented, and rightly so, on the reason we are not bringing forward the gambling control Bill now. It would be my dearest wish to bring it forward if I could, but I call tell colleagues it is extraordinarily complicated. We have spent the past year...
